Effect of Fluid Intake Encouragement Program on Moisture Content, Skin Hydration, Urine Tract Infection in the Elderly

چکیده
To examine the effect of a program to encourage fluid intake in institutionalized elderly people. A non-equivalent control group preand post-time series design was used. Data were analyzed with the SPSS program by t-test, chi-square test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Elderly people in the experimental group showed significantly better outcomes in terms of body weight reduction, skin moisture levels, and fluid intake and output compared with elderly people in the control group. Elderly people in the experimental group also showed significantly better outcomes in comparison with elderly people in the control group in relation to urinalysis including odor, pH, specific gravity, osmolality, color, white blood cell count, and bacteriuria. A hydration management program could be one of the most effective nursing strategies to ultimately enhance the quality of life and health of institutionalized elderly people.

Introduction: Water is an essential nutrient for life. It comprises 75% of total body weight in infants,60% in adult males and 50% in adult females. Decrease in body water is commonly known as dehydration. Acute or chronic dehydration is a common condition in some population groups, especialy the elderly and those who participate in physical activity in warm enviroments. Potential consequences ...
متن کاملFluid intake and urinary tract infection.
Physicians often recommend that patients with UTI increase their fluid intake. This practice has continued for years largely unchallenged because it is so logical: a water diuresis would serve to “flush” the urinary tract of infecting organisms and the increased frequency of voiding would reduce bacterial multiplication in the bladder. However, since dilution of urine affects both the osmolalit...
متن کاملPreexercise urine specific gravity and fluid intake during one-hour running in a thermoneutral environment - a randomized cross-over study.
Urine specific gravity is often used to assess hydration status. Athletes who are hypohydrated prior to exercise tend to ingest more fluid during the exercise, possibly to compensate for their pre exercise fluid deficit. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of additional fluid intake on fluid balance and gastrointestinal tract comfort during 1h running in a thermoneutral environ...
متن کاملEffect of dietary water intake on urinary output, specific gravity and relative supersaturation for calcium oxalate and struvite in the cat.
It has been reported that daily fluid intake influences urinary dilution, and consequently the risk of urolithiasis in human subjects and dogs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of dietary moisture on urinary parameters in healthy adult cats by comparing nutritionally standardised diets, varying only in moisture content. A total of six cats were fed a complete dry food (6...
متن کاملIngestion of an Oral Hyaluronan Solution Improves Skin Hydration, Wrinkle Reduction, Elasticity, and Skin Roughness: Results of a Clinical Study
Intake of oral supplements with the aim of a cutaneous antiaging effect are increasingly common. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a promising candidate, as it is the key factor for preserving tissue hydration. In our practice study, we evaluated the effect of an oral HA preparation diluted in a cascade-fermented organic whole food concentrate supplemented with biotin, vitamin C, copper, and zinc (Regula...
